It means each iron atom is chemically bonded to glycine molecules, forming a stable, neutral ring. That ring changes everything about how the iron behaves: it stays protected from the compounds in food that would otherwise block it, and it releases the iron inside your gut wall rather than loose in your stomach. Loose ionic iron is what causes the burning, nausea and cramping people associate with iron tablets.

Far less than conventional iron. Gut side effects are the leading reason people abandon iron therapy, with 40 to 50% quitting ferrous sulfate. Because bisglycinate releases its iron inside the intestinal wall rather than in the stomach, and because far less unabsorbed iron reaches the colon, it is consistently the best tolerated oral iron in head-to-head trials.

It makes this form more relevant, not less. Indian staples including rice, wheat, dal, sorghum supply around 70% of daily iron intake but are also high in phytates, which are one of many compounds that interfere with iron absorption. The chelate ring shields the iron from phytates, tannins and polyphenols entirely. If you eat a plant based Indian diet, this is the single strongest argument for chelated iron over a cheaper salt.

You do not have to. Conventional iron is usually recommended on an empty stomach for absorption, which is exactly what makes it so hard on the gut. Bisglycinate is absorbed well either way, so take it whenever you will remember it consistently. If you have a sensitive stomach, take it with food.

Mostly yes, with one exception worth knowing. Calcium and magnesium compete with iron for absorption, so take those at a different time of day, iron in the morning and magnesium at night works well. Vitamin D3+K2 and omega-3 are fine alongside it.

Get tested. A haemoglobin and ferritin blood test are inexpensive and the only way to know. Ferritin shows your reserve stores and usually drops long before haemoglobin does, which is why people can feel exhausted while their haemoglobin still reads normal. We would rather you test than guess. Iron is a supplement, you should take it because you need it, not just in case.

Iron requirements rise substantially in pregnancy, and ferrous bisglycinate has the strongest evidence base of any oral iron form in pregnant women with better haemoglobin outcomes than other forms, at lower doses, with fewer side effects. That said, iron in pregnancy should be taken under medical supervision, so please speak to your doctor before starting.

Iron interacts with several common medicines, If you are on prescription medication, check with your doctor or pharmacist about timing.
